𝗘𝗦𝗚 𝘃𝘀. 𝗖𝗦𝗥 𝘃𝘀. 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀

I’ve always believed that one of the most common barriers to progress in sustainability is terminology. We often see ESG, CSR, and Sustainability used interchangeably yet they serve different purposes, different audiences, and drive different outcomes. This visual captures the relationship between the three concepts beautifully. 👏 ♻️

𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 is the big picture, the overarching goal. It’s the long-term balance of environmental protection, social equity, and economic stability for society as a whole. It’s broad, systemic, and applies to individuals, organisations, and governments. At its core, sustainability asks: How do we operate within planetary boundaries while ensuring people and economies can thrive?

𝗖𝗦𝗥 (𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆) sits within that circle. CSR is about a company’s culture and values, the voluntary actions businesses take to give back to society, go beyond profits, and demonstrate responsibility toward people and the environment. CSR has been around since the 1950s, rooted in philanthropy, community engagement, and ethical behaviour.

𝗘𝗦𝗚 (𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹, 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 & 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲) is the most structured and investor-facing layer. ESG translates sustainability into measurable indicators data, KPIs, governance processes, risk assessments, and disclosures. It is how organisations demonstrate performance, manage risks, and attract capital. ESG has become central to investment decisions, reporting frameworks, due diligence, and regulatory compliance.

𝗔 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴:
▪️ CSR is about values. ESG is about performance. Sustainability is about long-term survival.
▪️ ESG turns sustainability into something investors, regulators, and boards can evaluate.
▪️ CSR builds trust. ESG builds accountability. Sustainability builds resilience.
▪️ Strong organisations integrate all three culture (CSR), data and governance (ESG), and long-term strategy (Sustainability).
▪️ The future belongs to companies that understand how these layers reinforce each other.
