Weโve been reading the โGuide to Planning Healthy Citiesโ (by ETS Arquitectura, Universidad Politรฉcnica de Madrid and the Spanish Ministry of Health), and itโs an essential reference for professionals working at the intersection of urbanism, sustainability, equity, and health.
๐ The Guide outlines three key lines of action for transforming our cities:
1. Walkable cities. Prioritising pedestrians and active mobility
2. Bringing nature into the city. Green and blue infrastructure for climate, air quality, and wellbeing
3. Creating spaces for meeting and socialising. To reduce isolation and promote equity
๐ง Key insights and lessons:
Healthy urban design must address sedentarism, pollution, mental health, ageing, and social inequality.
Planning must integrate universal accessibility, subjective safety, and climate resilience.
Cities should be understood as determinants of health with policies that make the healthiest choices the easiest ones (WHO).
This is more than a technical document itโs a strategic tool to support municipalities and local professionals in building healthier, more inclusive environments for all.
