The Happy Public Spaces booklet ๐ developed at Delft University of Technology provides a research-based, actionable framework with 20 design ingredients to guide us. These ingredients such as: connectivity, multisensory richness, inclusiveness, flexibility, and place identity, help us evaluate and enhance how public spaces contribute to urban happiness.
We know that streets, parks, and plazas are more than physical infrastructures they are stages for social life, health, creativity, and collective memory. Yet too often, these intangible qualities remain unmeasured and undervalued.
This guide enables us to:
โ Identify and operationalize key dimensions of happiness in public space design.
โ Measure them rigorously through tools like GIS, observations, self-reports, and semantic analysis.
โ Integrate subjective and objective factors from environmental comfort to social interaction into planning decisions.
โ Communicate clearly with stakeholders about the value of designing for happiness.
๐ By applying these insights, we can move beyond functionality and aesthetics to create spaces that support emotional and psychological wellbeing for all users, across diverse contexts.
