Urban Innovations for Just and Sustainable Cities: Learning from Informality

I recently explored “Urban Innovations for Just and Sustainable Cities”, a groundbreaking collection by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and IIED showcasing 14 transformative case studies from informal settlements worldwide. Here’s what inspired me:

Key Themes:

1️⃣ Local Leadership & Partnerships: Initiatives like Kisumu’s river restoration (Kenya) and female-led climate action in Ecuador prove that collaboration between communities and governments drives sustainable change.
2️⃣ Community-Led Knowledge: From mangrove restoration in Sierra Leone to climate vulnerability mapping in Liberia, grassroots data collection empowers inclusive planning.
3️⃣ Reimagining Finance: Urban Poor Funds in Namibia/Zimbabwe and Senegal’s revolving housing funds demonstrate how community-managed resources can scale impact.
4️⃣ Global Advocacy: Networks like Slum Dwellers International (SDI) reframe informality through solidarity, data, and policy influence.

Why It Matters:

– 1 in 4 urban dwellers live in informal settlements, yet their innovations are often overlooked.
– These projects advance climate resilience, gender equity, and affordable housing—priorities for the UN’s 2030 Agenda.
– Solutions are replicable: Participatory design, incremental financing, and nature-based models offer blueprints for cities everywhere.

Informality isn’t a problem to “fix”—it’s a source of ingenuity. As urban challenges grow, we must center the voices of informal settlers in global dialogues.
