Biological wastewater treatment refers to the process of using microorganisms (such as bacteria, fungi, and algae) to break down and remove organic pollutants, nutrients (like nitrogen and phosphorus), and other contaminants from wastewater. This natural process mimics the way nature purifies water, utilizing biological processes to cleanse polluted water.

Types of Biological Treatment:
– Aerobic Treatment: In this method, microorganisms use oxygen to break down organic pollutants. It typically occurs in aeration tanks where air is supplied to encourage microbial activity. Examples include activated sludge systems and trickling filters.

– Facultative Treatment: Some systems, such as facultative lagoons, use both aerobic and anaerobic processes. These lagoons have an upper aerobic layer where oxygen is present and a lower anaerobic layer.

– Cost-Effective: Compared to chemical treatments, biological methods are typically less expensive and require fewer chemicals.
– Sustainability: Biological treatment is a natural process that reduces the need for harsh chemicals and generates less waste.
– Energy Recovery: Some biological processes, especially anaerobic treatment, produce biogas (methane), which can be used for energy generation, making the treatment process more energy-efficient.
