Investing In Mangroves

Although 79% of companies have already set climate goals, only 26% are reporting on nature-related progress. This gap is concerning, especially since nature-based solutions are essential to achieving net-zero targets. According to the World Economic Forum, around 2.75 billion people live near coastlines where ecosystems like mangroves are crucial for livelihoods, food security, and land rights. Sadly, these areas are at risk. They store a lot of carbon, even more than land forests. But today, half of the world’s mangroves could be lost.
The private sector has a key role to play in scaling up mangrove restoration. In this World Economic Forum white paper, companies can engage through four main avenues: purchasing sustainability or carbon credits, forming supply chain partnerships, developing on-the-ground projects, and participating in broader advocacy or collaborations.
At PT Bussan Auto Finance, during 2024–2025, we are managing 9,328 square meters of land, planting over 40,000 mangroves across several regions in Indonesia by actively involving our dealer network and business partners in supporting and expanding our mangrove initiatives. This effort has the potential to sequester an estimated 12 tons of CO₂. We are partnering with LindungiHutan to monitor and maintain the planted areas, and we plan to continue and scale this initiative throughout 2025.
