Not All Energy Solutions Are Created Equal
When we talk about the energy transition, it’s easy to imagine a silver bullet a single technology that will solve everything. But the truth? It’s more of a spectrum than a shortcut.
The Energy Transitions Commission recently visualized this beautifully:
A dynamic spread of technologies each with their own rhythm, costs, and readiness.
At one end? We’ve got the front-runners.
Batteries for electric vehicles
Solar photovoltaics (PV)
These two have seen mind-blowing cost drops 85–95% in just the last 12 years. That’s not just innovation that’s acceleration. These are the technologies that moved fast, scaled faster, and now lead the way in making clean energy more accessible.
But what about the rest?
Further along the curve, there are the emerging tools still in the race, still essential.
a. Green hydrogen
b. Carbon capture
c. Advanced biofuels
They may not be cheap (yet). Or scalable (yet). But they’re vital to decarbonize the hard-to-abate sectors think steel, shipping, aviation.
What this spectrum tells us is clear:
The future of energy isn’t a one-size-fits-all story. It’s a layered, evolving, and sometimes uneven journey. We need to celebrate the breakthroughs and stay committed to the long game supporting the technologies still climbing the curve. Because if we want to hit net zero, we’ll need every tool in the box.
