Assessing the value of nature
The infographic titled “Assessing the Values of Nature” from IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) introduces four main approaches, or “method families,” for understanding and assessing the value of nature. Here’s a breakdown:
- Nature-based Valuation:
- This approach gathers, measures, or analyzes information about the properties of nature and how it contributes to people’s well-being.
- It focuses on assessing nature’s contributions through data and scientific analysis, often quantifying ecosystem services like water purification, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity.
- Statement-based Valuation:
- In this approach, people are directly asked to express their values related to nature.
- This can involve surveys or interviews where individuals articulate the importance they place on nature for cultural, spiritual, or personal reasons.
- Behaviour-based Valuation:
- This method identifies how people value nature by observing their behavior and practices.
- Examples include looking at how people use natural resources, interact with landscapes, or engage in conservation activities, giving insight into their underlying values based on actions.
- Integrated Valuation:
- This approach brings together various types of values assessed through different methods and information sources.
- By combining multiple perspectives (e.g., cultural, economic, ecological), integrated valuation aims to provide a holistic understanding of nature’s value in decision-making processes.
The infographic emphasizes that no single valuation method fits all situations. Instead, using complementary methods helps to make a broader diversity of values visible, thereby improving the quality of information available to support better decision-making for nature and people.
