ESG roles to achieve the SDG goals

What does sustainability look like not in theory, but in your job description?

We often talk about ESG like it’s a department or a reporting requirement. But in reality, it’s so much more: a shift in how we work, how we lead, and how we measure progress. ESG is increasingly woven into the DNA of every industry and the roles emerging today reflect a future that demands collaboration, foresight, and care.

I came across this diagram by Michael Page about a year ago, mapping ESG-aligned roles to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). I’m bringing it back now because it feels more relevant than ever.

Here’s what stood out to me:

It’s not just about green tech though technical innovation is crucial.
Smart grid engineers, carbon capture specialists, and eco-design professionals are pushing boundaries, solving for climate, energy, and efficiency with precision.

It’s not just about the environment it’s also about justice, inclusion, and accountability.
Think of diversity managers, racial equity consultants, and anti-corruption officers. These are the people anchoring sustainability in fairness, ethics, and truth.

It’s not just about strategy it’s also about operations.
Watershed managers, sustainable transport planners, and supply chain analysts ensure our ambitions are grounded in practical action where policy meets pavement.

And importantly, many of these roles are designed to be proactive.
Marine debris coordinators. Climate risk analysts. Professionals working quietly behind the scenes to build systems that resist shocks before they hit.

This visual isn’t just a framework it’s a mirror.
It asks us: How is your work contributing to a more sustainable, equitable world?

Because sustainability isn’t one job it’s everyone’s job. Whether you’re in finance or farming, education or energy, tech or transport there’s a role for you in this collective effort.

Maybe this is the reminder we need today:

  • That every small decision counts.
  • That accountability is part of the plan.
  • And that the work of building a better world is already happening one role, one team, one commitment at a time.
