GLOBAL PLASTIC TREATY: WHAT’S THE MATTER?

In the past three years, the United Nations, through the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), has initiated an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, which started in 2022. The treaty aims to adopt a comprehensive approach that considers the entire lifecycle of plastics, from various aspects and production stages through to disposal and waste management. The discussions occurred in many sessions, but in 2025 there haven’t been any finalization. The reasons vary, including member state priorities, the consensus of the cycle of plastics, and complexities related to balancing environmental goals with economic and social considerations. Additionally, disagreements over responsibilities for plastic pollution, funding mechanisms, and implementation timelines are also the challenges to finalize the treaty.
