Investing in natural capital for eradicating extreme poverty and boosting shared prosperity a biodiversity roadmap for the WBG

The purpose of this Roadmap is to outline strategic priority actions for the World Bank Group (WBG) to support its clients in their quest to eliminate extreme poverty by 2030 and boost shared prosperity through the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. It describes the key areas of support to our clients to address poverty, shared prosperity, and sustainability. It builds on the WBG’s corporate strategy of 2013 and the 2012–22 environment strategy. It is closely aligned with the WBG Agricultural Action Plan (2012) and the Forest Action Plan (in progress). It is based on the comparative advantage of the WBG
in defining key areas of action for the coming years, especially the expertise and capacity for policy-level and economy-wide engagement, as well as its experience in finance and the private sector. It draws upon WBG experience over the past 10 years and outlines what knowledge, resources, partnerships, and engagements it takes to deliver successful solutions that enhance inclusive green growth and support the sustainable development and livelihoods of the world’s poor people.
Biodiversity is the living natural capital that underpins conventionally measured economic growth and well-being. It includes the diversity within species, the number of species, and the diversity within and among ecosystems our renewable natural capital. It is of overarching importance for maintaining the
earth’s life-supporting systems and it interacts with other critical global systems. Biodiversity is essential for ecosystem functions, and the functional diversity of ecosystems is important in supporting the flow of ecosystem goods and services (Cardinale et al. 2012).
