NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS FOR CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE UK: A REPORT BY THE BRITISH ECOLOGICAL SOCIETY

Nature-based solutions (NbS) is an umbrella term that brings together a diverse range of stakeholders and disciplines into collaboration, resulting in transdisciplinary work and a range of differing perspectives. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) defines nature-based solutions as “actions to protect, sustainably manage and restore natural and modified ecosystems in ways that address societal challenges effectively and adaptively, to provide both human well-being and biodiversity benefits. They are underpinned by benefits that flow from healthy ecosystems and target major challenges like climate change, disaster risk reduction, food and water security, health and are critical to economic development.”
We recognize that NbS is a broad concept and can provide multiple benefits. For the purposes of this report, we have taken a narrow focus on the benefits for biodiversity, climate change mitigation and climate change adaptation. This is due to the objectives of the BES and the expertise of our members. Whilst the exact definition of NbS can vary between organizations and within literature (as shown in Annex 1 to this chapter), at the core of the concept is the multi-functional benefits that can be derived from using nature as a solution to a range of problems.
