Realms of Urban Design Mapping Sustainability

The concept of a sustainable and resilient built environment continues to evolve, requiring ongoing critical examination. In response, the thematic series Reviews of Sustainability and Resilience of the Built Environment for Education, Research and Design aims to deepen understanding of these two interconnected approaches. It does so by exploring their historical development, addressing current challenges, and anticipating future directions.
This series is one of the key outcomes of the Erasmus+ project Creating the Network of Knowledge Labs for Sustainable and Resilient Environments (KLABS), which focuses on establishing a comprehensive educational platform for second-cycle higher education across the Western Balkan region.
Recognizing that the built environment is both multi-layered and multidisciplinary, the series is structured into five thematic volumes. It begins with a socio-spatial perspective on sustainability and resilience, then progresses to urban planning and design, and finally examines individual buildings alongside various approaches, methods, and tools—particularly those related to energy efficiency and performance.
Adopting a systemic approach, the series addresses multiple scales and dimensions of the built environment. A total of 83 academics from 12 countries contributed 54 papers, presented as narrative reviews or evidence-based studies. These contributions aim to advance specialized knowledge, foster critical awareness of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary issues, and strengthen the link between academic education and scientific research.
Ultimately, the series seeks to provide a valuable collection of insights on sustainability and resilience in the built environment, serving students, educators, professionals, and researchers engaged in these critical global topics.
