The Carbon Problem Is Bigger Than Transport
Look closely at this chart and one message stands out:
Global greenhouse gas emissions come from far more than cars and factories.
The breakdown shows six major economic sectors:
⚡ Electricity — 25.3%
🏭 Industry — 24.9%
🌾 Food, Agriculture & Land Use — 18.4%
🚗 Transport — 15.6%
🔋 Other Energy — 10.6%
🏢 Buildings — 5.3%
But the real insight is deeper.
Within electricity, emissions are linked largely to electricity used by buildings and industry.
Within industry, major contributors include metals, chemicals, waste and cement.
Within food and land use, deforestation and livestock methane are significant sources.
And in transport, road travel alone accounts for 10.3%.
So the climate challenge isn’t one problem with one solution.
It is a systems challenge.
Clean electricity.
Low-carbon industry.
Sustainable food systems.
Better land management.
Cleaner transport.
Efficient buildings.
Every sector has emissions—and therefore, every sector has an opportunity to reduce them.
If emissions come from everywhere, climate solutions must be everywhere too.
