The evolving doughnut

The Doughnut of social and planetary boundaries is a conceptual framework that proposes a goal for a
thriving 21st century. Since I first drew it in 2011 it has kept evolving in its dimensions, indicators and visualization and will continue to do so. This paper sets out where inspiration for the framework came from, and how and why it has evolved over its first three iterations. Following this, the paper presents
tables showing the dimensions, indicators and data used for each of those three versions.
At its conceptual core, the Doughnut consists of the space between two concentric rings. The inner ring represents a social foundation, below which lies critical human deprivation. The outer ring represents an ecological ceiling, beyond which lies critical planetary degradation. Between these two rings lies a doughnut-shaped space that depicts a 21st century ambition for humanity: to safeguard the stability of our planetary home while ensuring that no one falls short of meeting their essential needs. Together these define the minimal conditions of an ecologically safe and socially just space for humanity.
