So i found this photo as i was scrolling on the Internet and its just the reality of almost every african country Zambia inclusive and just thought of having a say about it because every day we complain about flooded roads, blocked drainage systems and dirty cities.
But sometimes, we forget to look at the small actions that contribute to these problems.
The image below depicts a powerful story which is
• What we do – careless disposal of waste.
• What it causes – blocked drainage systems filled with plastics and garbage.
• What we complain about – flooded streets after the rain.
This is a reality we often see in many parts of Zambia. Plastic bottles, food packaging and other wastes end up in drainages, preventing proper water flow and eventually causing floods.
But this problem is not unsolvable because there are a few solutions we can start implementing in Zambia which are
1. Responsible waste disposal – Every individual must take responsibility for disposing of waste properly instead of throwing it from vehicles or onto the streets.
2. Improved waste management systems – Local authorities should invest more in accessible bins and reliable waste collection services.
3. Recycling initiatives – Encouraging plastic recycling businesses and community recycling programs can significantly reduce plastic waste.
4. Public awareness campaigns – Education in schools, communities and workplaces can help change long-term behavior.
5. Community clean-up programs – Residents, students, and organizations can regularly organize clean-up activities in their neighborhoods.
Real change happens when citizens, communities and institutions work together.
Before we complain about flooded roads, we should ask ourselves one question
“What role am I playing in keeping my city clean?”
Small actions by millions of people can transform our communities.
