The sustainable development goals report 2025

Five Years to Go: A Sobering Yet Hopeful Look at Global SDG Progress
July 14, 2025 marks a pivotal moment: the release of The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2025. This tenth annual stocktaking of global progress towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development delivers a stark, yet crucial, assessment. With the 2030 deadline now just five years away, the report makes it clear: while the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have undeniably improved millions of lives, the current pace of change is simply insufficient to fully achieve all the Goals by 2030.
Progress Amidst Persistent Challenges
The past decade has not been without significant victories. Since 2015, the world has made real and substantial development gains. We’ve seen notable strides in expanding access to education, improving maternal and child health outcomes, and bridging the digital divide. Effective prevention efforts have led to a significant reduction in the burdens of infectious diseases like HIV and malaria. Furthermore, access to electricity has continued its upward trajectory, with renewable energy emerging as the fastest-rising source of power globally. These achievements are a testament to the dedicated efforts of countless individuals and organizations worldwide.
However, the report also serves as a critical reminder that this progress has been fragile and profoundly unequal. Millions still grapple with the harsh realities of extreme poverty, persistent hunger, inadequate housing, and a pervasive lack of basic services. Vulnerable groups, including women, people with disabilities, and marginalized communities, continue to face entrenched systemic disadvantages. Compounding these challenges are escalating conflicts, the increasingly chaotic impacts of climate change, widening inequalities, and soaring debt servicing costs – all acting as formidable brakes on further advancement.
Pathways to Acceleration: A Call for Coordinated Action
Despite these significant setbacks, the report is not without hope. It shines a light on inspiring national and local success stories that demonstrate accelerated progress is not only possible but already happening. Examples like universal electricity access achieved in 45 countries and the elimination of neglected tropical diseases in 54 countries prove that focused effort can yield transformative results.
To truly turn the ambition of the 2030 Agenda into reality, the report issues a powerful call for action in six critical priority areas:
- Food systems: Ensuring sustainable and equitable access to nutritious food for all.
- Energy access: Expanding reliable and affordable clean energy solutions.
- Digital transformation: Leveraging technology to bridge divides and foster inclusive development.
- Education: Guaranteeing quality, equitable, and inclusive education for everyone.
- Jobs and social protection: Creating decent work opportunities and robust safety nets.
- Climate and biodiversity: Urgent action to combat climate change and protect our planet’s natural wealth.
Crucially, the report also urges increased international cooperation and sustained investment. It’s a clear message: only through collective will and shared resources can we overcome the hurdles and secure a sustainable, equitable future for all by 2030.
