What if one of nature’s smallest plants could play a bigger role in tackling climate change?
Moss may look insignificant, but its ecological contribution is anything but small.
A 2023 study published in Nature Geoscience found that soil mosses cover approximately 9.4 million kmΒ² worldwide, contributing to carbon storage, nutrient cycling and soil health.
But their potential goes beyond carbon.
π± Natural carbon storage: Moss-covered soils support significant carbon sequestration.
ποΈ Urban cooling: Moss-based green roofs can help reduce surface temperatures through moisture retention and evaporation.
π§ Water management: Moss absorbs and retains water, helping regulate moisture in ecosystems.
π Biodiversity: Moss habitats support microorganisms and contribute to healthier ecosystems.
π’ Green infrastructure: Moss offers opportunities for innovative rooftop and building designs.
Importantly, moss does not universally absorb more COβ than trees. Its contribution depends on species, environmental conditions and ecosystem characteristics.
The bigger lesson? Climate solutions don’t always have to be enormous. Sometimes, protecting the smallest parts of nature can deliver meaningful environmental benefits.
Perhaps it’s time we stopped overlooking the power of moss.
