Transparency of information and public participation in energy transition

The Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) is a climate finance initiative launched at COP26 in 2021 by a coalition of developed nations to help developing countries transition away from fossil fuels. The JETP framework encourages the involvement of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in achieving the Paris Agreement’s climate goals. Following the initial launch, an agreement was reached for Indonesia in 2022.
A recent study examined the role of CSOs in shaping Indonesia’s JETP policy by analyzing 134 articles from ten Indonesian online media outlets published between August 2020 and June 2024. The researchers used two analytical tools: Discourse Network Analysis (DNA) to map discourse patterns and MICMAC (Matrix of Crossed Impact Multiplications Applied to a Classification) to identify dominant themes.
The analysis revealed that transparency and public participation are critical factors that significantly influence energy transition policies within the JETP framework. This highlights the crucial role that CSOs and media engagement play in holding both the government and international partners accountable, ensuring that the energy transition is not only just but also inclusive.
