✅ 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝟭— 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀
From sources the organization owns or controls directly (e.g., fuel burned onsite, company vehicles).

✅ 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝟮 — 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀
From the generation of purchased electricity, heating, or cooling consumed by the organization.

✅ 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝟯 — 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀
All other indirect emissions in the entire value chain, from suppliers to product end-of-life. It is often the largest part of an organization’s carbon footprint (think raw material extraction, distribution, employee travel, waste, etc).

✅ 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝟰 — 𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 (𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁)
Represents emissions reductions achieved by enabling others to avoid emissions through your products or services (e.g., renewable energy technology that displaces fossil fuel use).

🌿 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗳:
🔹 Scope 1: fuel used in your fleet
🔹 Scope 2: your purchased electricity
🔹 Scope 3: outsourced manufacturing, supplier logistics
🔹 Scope 4: electric cars or renewable energy projects you sell (It is still a voluntary metric devised by the World Resources Institute in 2013)

📣 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿?
Our mission must focus on driving down Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions to near zero through strategic policies, technological innovation, and resilient infrastructure at local, regional, and international levels.

At the same time, we should accelerate Scope 4 (emerging topic) — avoided emissions — by enabling low-carbon goods and services that displace higher-emission alternatives. Only by minimizing operational emissions while maximizing avoided emissions can we achieve a truly sustainable, climate-positive future.
