When people talk about international climate action, the Paris Agreement takes center stage. But without the Kyoto Protocol, Paris may never have existed.
The two treaties often get confused, yet they reflect two very different eras in global climate policy:
Binding targets, but only for developed countries.
โข Focused mainly on cutting emissions (mitigation).
โข Created carbon markets (CDM, JI), but participation was limited.
โข Ended up too rigid and narrow in scope.
Applies to all countries through self-set climate plans (NDCs).
โข Expanded to cover adaptation, finance, and loss & damage.
โข Anchored the net-zero by 2050 vision.
โข Backed by global stocktakes, transparency, and peer pressure.
90%+ of the world economy is under net-zero pledges.
โข $100B/year in climate finance is being mobilized under Paris.
โข Carbon markets are evolving through Article 6.
โข COP28 in Dubai reaffirmed the Paris goals with the first-ever Global Stocktake.
โข Kyoto = historic first step, but too limited.
โข Paris = todayโs global framework, universal and future-focused.
The distinctions between the two agreements can sometimes be overlooked. Iโve created a concise side-by-side PDF comparison of Kyoto Protocolย vs Paris Agreement , would love to hear your thoughts after reading it .
