10 Basic carbon terms

Carbon terminology can be confusing, but understanding these key concepts is crucial for making sense of climate news and conversations. Here are 10 essential terms to help you navigate the world of carbon.

10 Carbon Terms You Need to Know

  1. Carbon Footprint: This is the total amount of greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide, released into the atmosphere by a single person, organization, or product. It’s a measure of your personal or collective impact on the climate.
  2. Greenhouse Gases (GHG): These are gases that trap heat in the atmosphere, leading to the greenhouse effect and global warming. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most well-known, but others include methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O).
  3. Carbon Sequestration: The process of capturing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide. This can happen naturally, through forests and oceans, or through technological solutions like carbon capture and storage (CCS) facilities.
  4. Carbon Neutrality: Achieving a state where the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere is balanced by the amount of carbon removed. This is often done by reducing emissions and using offsets.
  5. Net-Zero Emissions: Going a step further than carbon neutrality, this is a target to completely eliminate all greenhouse gas emissions, or to offset any remaining emissions through permanent removal.
  6. Carbon Offsetting: A way to compensate for your emissions by funding projects that reduce an equivalent amount of carbon, such as planting trees or investing in renewable energy.
  7. Carbon Tax: A fee on activities that produce carbon emissions, designed to make polluters pay for the environmental damage they cause and encourage them to reduce their emissions.
  8. Carbon Trading (Emissions Trading System): A market-based approach to control pollution by issuing permits to companies that allow them to emit a certain amount of carbon. Companies can then buy or sell these permits, creating an incentive to reduce emissions.
  9. Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs): Market-based instruments that certify a unit of electricity was generated from a renewable source. Companies can purchase these to claim they are using renewable energy, even if the power they use comes from the grid.
  10. Climate Resilience: The ability of a system, community, or society to withstand and recover from the effects of climate change. This involves building stronger infrastructure, adapting to new weather patterns, and preparing for future climate impacts.
