5 Reasons Why Mangroves Are Ecosystem Heroes

Mangroves are ecosystem heroes: they store carbon, act as a buffer against storms, and are biodiversity hotspots. But they’re disappearing or being degraded at an alarming rate: more than half of all mangrove ecosystems are at risk of collapse by 2050.

The first International Mangrove Conservation and Restoration Conference, happening this week in Abu Dhabi, aims to bridge the gap between cutting-edge science on mangrove ecosystems and the implementation of best practices for mangrove conservation and restoration.

International partners including the Global Ocean Decade Programme for Blue Carbon (GO-BC), led by the University of St Andrews and endorsed by the Tagar#OceanDecade, have supported the organisation of this conference.
