Lessons learned from Jakarta’s journey to integrated and resilient transport systems

Jakarta’s journey to winning the 2021 Sustainable Transport Award is a testament to what’s possible when a city dares to rethink its future. Once a metropolis dominated by cars and congestion, Jakarta has rewritten its story-placing people, resilience, and integration at the heart of its mobility revolution.

This achievement didn’t happen overnight. It was the result of years of determined leadership and a willingness to challenge the status quo. The city’s “JakLingko” scheme became the backbone of this transformation, uniting buses, microbuses, MRT, and LRT with a single flat fare and seamless transfers, making public transport more accessible and affordable for millions. The results speak volumes: service coverage for frequent, rapid road-based transit soared to 83 percent, and ridership continues to climb.

Jakarta didn’t stop at integration. The city boldly reclaimed streets for people-expanding sidewalks, building permanent bike lanes, and launching one of Southeast Asia’s first superblocks. Parking spaces once reserved for cars now serve as vibrant public areas, supporting walking and cycling and nurturing a new urban culture.

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Jakarta responded not by retreating, but by accelerating its vision. The city prioritized pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, ensuring that mobility remained safe, inclusive, and resilient in the face of crisis.

Governor Anies Baswedan captured the spirit of this transformation:

“Integrating public transport, revitalizing pedestrian areas, and building permanent cycling lanes are now at the top of our priorities. Our goal is for every resident to access public transport within a 15 minute walk from anywhere in Jakarta.”

Jakarta’s recognition as the first Southeast Asian city to win the Sustainable Transport Award is more than a trophy it’s a call to action for cities everywhere. The lesson is clear: with vision, collaboration, and courage, even the most car dependent cities can become models of sustainable, people-centered mobility.
