The Extension Impacts of Nickel Industry Activities in Weda Bay, Central Halmahera, North Maluku, Indonesia

Nexus3 Foundation together with Tadulako University proudly launched our latest research on environmental monitoring and human biomonitoring in Weda Bay, North Maluku, one of the biggest nickel industrial hubs in Indonesia, which was conducted in June 2024.

“The Extension Impacts of Nickel Industry Activities in Weda Bay, Central Halmahera, North Maluku, Indonesia” explores the extension impact of Nickel Industry in Weda Bay area to local environmental and public health.

Our study reveals important findings, such as,
🌊Changes in the status of river water function from class 1 to class 3 of indonesian river water standard quality category, supporting local community complaints about the river’s diminished function as a drinking and clean water source.
🐟All fish samples collected from Weda Bay waters contained mercury and arsenic at varying concentrations. 🐟According to Indonesian FDA regulations, four fish samples exceeded the maximum allowable limit for total arsenic contamination of 2 mg/kg, while seven samples contained arsenic levels within the range of 1-2 mg/kg.
👷‍♂️Human biomonitoring on local communities for heavy metals parameters in blood revealed that 47% of respondents have blood mercury levels exceeding the safe limit of 9 ug/L, while 32% of respondents have blood arsenic levels exceeding the safe limit of 12 ug/L out of 46 total respondents. Blood levels of mercury and arsenic were higher in residents who were not workers at the IWIP.
