The Future of City Planning: Weaving Residents into the Fabric of Urban Development

Cities worldwide are grappling with a significant challenge: how to genuinely involve residents in shaping the urban planning decisions that directly impact their lives and communities. Traditional methods often fall short, becoming dominated by specific interest groups or amplifying the loudest voices, rather than fostering environments where constructive compromise can flourish.

At the heart of creating thriving, healthy cities is the need for more democratic and inclusive planning. In our foundational paper, “Six Ways to Democratise City Planning – Enabling Thriving and Healthy Cities,” we introduce six practical proposals designed to revolutionize decision-making processes. Our approach leverages sortition (random selection) alongside structured deliberation processes to overcome the common pitfalls of typical participation models.

These aren’t just theoretical concepts; they are the culmination of collaborative efforts. We developed these proposals hand-in-hand with our International Task Force, a group of 15 diverse experts spanning urban planning, city government, architecture, deliberative democracy, and community engagement from across the globe. This rich tapestry of experience ensures our proposals are not only innovative but also grounded in real-world understanding.
