Sustainable finance for sustainability professionals

This introductory guide represents an updated version of the 2018 IEMA Sustainable Finance Primer issued by the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) now known as the Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals (ISEP) and offers an overview of sustainable finance, emphasising its criticalrole in addressing global challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss and social inequality. This guide moves beyond simply considering environmental, social and governance (ESG)factors to actively directing capitaltowards projects, companies and activities that contribute to sustainability. The guide covers the evolution of sustainable finance, key concepts and practical applications for sustainability and financial professionals. In this chapter, sustainable finance is defined and its role in achieving sustainability goals is explained alongwith a discussion on core principles. In addition, ISEP’s vision in relation to sustainable finance is set out alongwith a discussion on opportunities for sustainability professionals.
In Chapter 2, core concepts are covered. In Chapter 3 there is a discussion of financial markets, key players and approaches. Chapter 4 covers investment strategies and Chapter 5 provides a discussion on the key types of financial instruments that are emerging as the main carriers of sustainable finance. Conclusions and a discussion on future directions is included as Chapter 6. There are an increasing number of regulations and frameworks through which corporations and financial institutions apply standards and best practices for sustainable finance. Key regulations, standards and frameworks are listed in Appendix A. There are also a growing number ofISEP-approved courses, certifications and qualifications on offerin impactinvesting and sustainable finance. These are discussed in Appendix B.
