Global waste volumes could increase 50% by 2050 without major policy and investment shifts.

The What a Waste 3.0 report warns that without action, annual waste volumes could grow to 3.86 billion tonnes by 2050. Rising waste volumes will overwhelm existing infrastructure, undermine global economic development and job creation, and threaten public health and the environment.

Key findings:

➡️ ⅓ of all global waste is dumped or uncollected
➡️Food makes up the largest share of global waste (38%)
➡️The average person produces 0.88kg of waste per day
➡️18 million people work in urban waste management.

The report finds that through ambitious investment and policy changes, countries can cap waste even as they grow their economies—expanding infrastructure, improving service quality, and unlocking millions of jobs.
