Retired EV Batteries Can Play a Vital Role in the Energy Transition

Most electric vehicle batteries are retired with up to 80% of their original capacity still intact. By 2035, about 4.6 million of these batteries could come off the roads per year — enough residual energy to power 20,000 U.S. homes for an entire year. It’s a huge opportunity to reuse that energy elsewhere, from rural mini-grids to backup systems.
Yet most will be recycled or thrown away before they get that chance. Falling battery prices, fragmented policies and safety concerns make second-life markets tricky to build. We explore what’s standing in the way of reusing EV batteries — and how they could help power the clean energy transition. Learn more.
