The Worlds Fastest Sinking Coastal Cities

Coastal cities around the world are facing a growing challenge: land subsidence.
A study published in Nature Sustainability used satellite data from 2014 to 2020 to examine land subsidence across 48 densely populated coastal cities worldwide.
The findings reveal that 44 of these cities are experiencing land subsidence at rates exceeding sea-level rise in at least some areas, with local sinking rates surpassing 20 mm per year.
Driven by factors such as groundwater extraction, urban development and soil compaction, land subsidence can significantly increase coastal flood risks.
💡🌱 Where can NBS contribute?
Restoring coastal ecosystems, including mangroves and wetlands, can help reduce wave impacts, strengthen coastal protection and support biodiversity.
