Extreme Heat More Dangerous

“Extreme heat is having an extreme impact on people and planet. The world must rise to the challenge of rising temperatures,” said António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General, calling for an urgent and concerted effort to enhance international cooperation to address extreme heat in four critical areas:
➡️ Caring for the vulnerable:
- Developing and implementing heat action plans to protect those most at risk, including the elderly, children, and people with preexisting health conditions.
- Creating cooling centers and providing access to air conditioning and water.
➡️ Protecting workers:
- Enforcing regulations to ensure safe working conditions in high temperatures, including appropriate work-rest cycles and access to cooling and hydration.
- Providing education and resources to workers and employers about the dangers of extreme heat and how to mitigate them.
➡️ Boosting resilience of economies and societies using data and science:
- Utilizing climate data and predictive models to inform urban planning and agricultural practices to withstand heatwaves.
- Investing in research and development to create heat-resistant infrastructure and crops.
➡️ Limiting temperature rise to 1.5°C by phasing out fossil fuels and scaling up investment in renewable energy:
- Accelerating the transition to renewable energy sources like wind, solar, and hydroelectric power.
- Implementing policies to reduce carbon emissions, including carbon pricing and subsidies for green technologies.
- Promoting energy efficiency and conservation practices across all sectors.
Extreme heat affects everyone, but the poorest people are especially at risk. We need to act now to reduce heat-related disaster risks by prioritizing the protection of vulnerable populations, ensuring safe working conditions, enhancing societal resilience through data and science, and committing to ambitious climate action to limit global temperature rise.
