Jakarta is waste levy

Recently, I had the pleasure of discussing Jakarta’s new mandatory waste levy with officials to gain a closer look at this policy, which will take effect on January 1, 2025. Below are my personal notes on this new initiative, which I believe could create opportunities to revive many waste banks and promote circular economy practices.

According to Perda Provinsi DKI Jakarta No. 1/2024, Jakarta aims to improve waste management and promote circular economy practices by introducing a mandatory waste levy. With over 8,600 tons of daily waste (SIPSN 2023), this levy is expected to generate IDR 600-700 billion annually, helping to bridge the funding gap for collection, disposal, and recycling.

One interesting aspect of this policy is the potential for citizens to reduce their waste levy by sorting waste themselves and sending it to waste banks. Waste bank is a community-based facility where individuals can deposit sorted recyclable materials in exchange for monetary compensation, savings or charity, which is promoting recycling and waste reduction. If successful, this could strengthen the feasibility of waste banks and significantly increase the recycling rate.

I hope Jakarta’s waste levy plan sets a new standard for sustainable waste management in Indonesia. I’m eager to see the lessons learned from its implementation.
