The Paral·lel complex, designed by OHLAB Architecture, doesn’t fight the Mediterranean climate with buzzing air conditioners and power-hungry heaters. Instead, it dances with it. The structure is wrapped in a “skin” of adjustable wooden shutters a direct descendant of traditional island design that allows the building to inhale and exhale with the seasons.

The Anatomy of a Living Building

Paral·lel proves that the most sophisticated “green tech” isn’t always found in a microchip; sometimes, it’s found in a hinge and a piece of timber.

• The Kinetic Shield: In the height of a Spanish summer, these wooden shutters filter the aggressive sun, casting dappled shadows that keep interiors naturally cool. When winter’s chill arrives, they peel back, inviting the sun to soak into the thermal mass of the floors and heat the home for free.
• A Closed Loop: Sustainability here is quiet. Rainwater is harvested from the clouds; solar panels drink from the sun. By using local hydraulic tiles and timber, the architects didn’t just reduce the “carbon miles” of the build they stitched the soul of Mallorca into the very walls.
• Low-Tech, High-Impact: This is Passive Solar Design at its finest a philosophy that prioritizes orientation, airflow, and insulation over complex mechanical systems.
