Carbon Footprints: It Matters – Step Lighter

A carbon footprint measures the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by individuals, organizations, or products, expressed in carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e).

Understanding the types of emissions (known as Scope 1, Scope 2, Scope 3) is essential for identifying reduction opportunities and fostering sustainable practices. These ‘scopes’ are defined by the ‘GHG Protocol’ which is the most widely used framework for GHG accounting and reporting.

Another emerging scope is Scope 4 – Emissions Avoided. This refers to greenhouse gas reductions that occur outside a product’s lifecycle or value chain but – as a result of using that product or service.

Scope 4 is not officially recognized by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, but it is gaining importance in corporate sustainability discussions.
