Carbon Offset Why It Won’t Fix Climate Crisis
Don’t confuse between carbon offsets and carbon credits while they are closely related, they serve distinct purposes in the fight against climate change.
1. Carbon Offset:
- Definition: A carbon offset represents a reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, achieved by investing in projects that prevent, reduce, or remove emissions elsewhere. Examples include planting trees, renewable energy projects, or methane capture.
- Purpose: Carbon offsets are typically used by individuals or companies to balance out their carbon footprint. If someone emits a certain amount of carbon, they can “offset” those emissions by funding projects that reduce carbon emissions in another part of the world.
2. Carbon Credit:
- Definition: A carbon credit is a tradable permit that allows the holder to emit one metric ton of CO2 or its equivalent in other GHGs. Governments or regulatory bodies issue these credits as part of a cap-and-trade system, where businesses must limit their emissions or purchase credits to stay within the allowable limits.
- Purpose: Carbon credits are part of compliance mechanisms, where regulated entities must stay under a legally mandated emissions cap. Companies that reduce their emissions below the cap can sell their excess credits to others.
Key Difference:
- Carbon offset is voluntary and can be purchased by anyone looking to neutralize their emissions.
- Carbon credit is a legal, tradable instrument used in regulated carbon markets, part of a governmental or international policy to control emissions.
In summary, carbon credits are about compliance in a regulatory framework, while carbon offsets are more flexible and voluntary tools to reduce the environmental impact.
