Have We Gone Backwards with Packaging?

Recently, I had a thought: what if the solution to our growing packaging crisis lies in revisiting some practices from the past?

There was a time when milk came in reusable glass bottles and beverages were sold in returnable containers. Today, plastic packaging is everywhere. While it offers convenience, the environmental cost is becoming impossible to ignore.

Plastic pollution is overwhelming our ecosystems, harming marine life, birds, and wildlife, while microplastics are increasingly contaminating our soils, water, and food systems. Over time, this threatens biodiversity, soil health, food security, and ultimately human well-being.

What if we designed packaging from renewable, plant-based materials that are reusable, compostable, and capable of safely returning to nature at the end of their lifecycle?

The answer is not simply replacing one material with another. It is about embracing a circular economy built on reuse, refill systems, sustainable alternatives, better recycling, and responsible production.

Perhaps the future of packaging is not just about innovation, but also about rediscovering the wisdom of designing products to be used again and again rather than discarded after a single use.
