Jakarta SME resilience profile

Catalyzing City Resilience Solutions

In Jakarta (Indonesia), the Resilient Cities Network (R-Cities) is running the Catalyzing City Resilience Solutions (CCRS) program with support from the Citi Foundation to help the local economy recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. This recovery will catalyze urban resilience by empowering and strengthening a selection of critical small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to develop locally relevant solutions. Together with the Regional Planning Development Agency (Bappeda) of Jakarta, R-Cities has identified the opportunity to use the CCRS program to diversify the green-mussel industry in Kalibaru (North Jakarta). Introducing new business initiatives to process the shell waste produced by the industry could add economic value, improve the local community’s livelihoods, and address environmental and health problems in Kalibaru.

SME Resilience Profile

To ensure that all program activities respond to the city’s needs and are grounded in the realities that the critical SMEs are facing, the CCRS program starts by assessing the challenges that both the Kalibaru community and the green-mussel industry are facing to understand the industry’s role in, relationship to, and impact on the community. This Jakarta SME “resilience profile” presents the results of the assessment process, summarized from two documents. The first is the Kalibaru Resilience Profile and Prospectus that presents the profile of Kalibaru subdistrict, examining the area’s vulnerability, shocks, and stresses. This contributes to the advancement of place-based Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to improving the resilience of the Kalibaru area and community through a multistakeholder collaboration. The second document is the Initial Assessment of Green Mussels in Kelurahan Kalibaru that provides a deep dive into the shell waste sector in Kalibaru that was identified as one of the priority issues in the first document. Both documents were completed in early 2022 and prepared by the local implementation partner Kota Kita Foundation, in close coordination with Bappeda Jakarta.
