Land Degradation Affect

The image highlights a critical issue land degradation, which affects up to 40% of the Earth’s surface globally. This degradation poses serious risks to climate stability, biodiversity, and livelihoods, as ecosystems become less resilient and productive. The image is tied to COP16, the 16th session of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), which will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from 2β13 December 2024.
The UNCCD is a global effort to combat land degradation and desertification, with a focus on sustainable land management and the restoration of ecosystems. This event will bring stakeholders together to discuss how to mitigate these impacts, particularly in areas vulnerable to desertification and land degradation, which exacerbate climate change, lead to loss of biodiversity, and threaten the livelihoods of millions, especially in arid and semi-arid regions.
The convention’s discussions are expected to emphasize the importance of restoring degraded lands, adopting sustainable agricultural practices, and fostering climate resilience, all of which are key to achieving global sustainability goals.
