Progress on Ambient Water Quality: A Mid-Term Update on SDG Indicator 6.3.2

At the midpoint of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the 2024 Progress Report for SDG Indicator 6.3.2 reveals critical insights into the state of ambient water quality globally. Here’s what stood out to me:

1️⃣ Increased Engagement, Yet Persistent Challenges
Since 2017, the number of countries reporting on ambient water quality has grown from 39 to 120. While this shows progress, significant gaps remain in monitoring capacity, particularly in low-income countries. The poorest half of the world contributed less than 3% of reported water quality data, highlighting an urgent need for equitable resource allocation.

2️⃣ The Interlinkages Between Water Quality and Health
By 2030, up to 4.8 billion people could face health risks due to water quality degradation. The report emphasizes the need to integrate water quality monitoring with health, climate, and biodiversity policies to mitigate these risks effectively.

3️⃣ Data Coverage and Citizen Science
Innovative approaches, like integrating citizen-generated data, are emerging as game-changers. Examples from Sierra Leone and Zambia demonstrate how this can bridge data gaps and empower communities to play a role in water quality monitoring.

4️⃣ Actionable Recommendations
The report calls on governments, private organizations, and individuals to prioritize routine water quality monitoring, share existing data, and build capacity. Without robust data, decision-making to protect and restore water quality remains ineffective.

🔍 The Way Forward
Water quality is essential not only for ecosystems but also for achieving SDG Target 6.3. We need accelerated efforts in monitoring, capacity building, and targeted interventions. Whether you’re a policymaker, researcher, or concerned citizen, there’s a role for everyone in addressing this global challenge.

📢 Let’s collaborate to close data gaps and ensure water quality for all. Explore the full report and learn how you can contribute at UN-Water SDG 6 Progress Reports.
