Radical Collaborations for Innovative Urban Solutions

With its rich cultural landscape, architectural gems, and vast natural areas, Espoo has earned the reputation of being “Finland in miniature.”

For a long time, Espoo was a quiet countryside parish. However, over the last 50 years, it has transformed from a town of 100,000 residents into one of Europe’s leading innovation communities. Today, Espoo is Finland’s fastest-growing city, with a population of 300,000. This growth has been fueled primarily by international immigration, making Espoo a vibrant, multicultural city with residents from 155 different nationalities.

Espoo is a unique network city with five distinct urban centers. These centers are connected by efficient public transportation and are designed to provide services to residents within their immediate neighborhoods. This design reflects Espoo’s commitment to economic, ecological, social, and cultural sustainability.

The city is a rare blend of deep technology and nature. Espoo is recognized as a hub for expertise, research, and development, with Aalto University at its core. Over half of the population holds a higher education degree. Espoo is also home to international company headquarters and high-tech businesses, such as Nokia and Kone. Remarkably, nearly half of the turnover on the Helsinki Stock Exchange is generated by companies based in Espoo.

Despite its technological and economic prowess, Espoo is deeply connected to nature. Over 90% of residents live within 300 meters of a natural area. The city boasts 165 islands, 95 lakes, and a 40 km shoreline along the Baltic Sea. The Nuuksio National Park, a popular destination for both locals and visitors, further highlights Espoo’s natural beauty. This proximity to nature is one of the aspects that Espoo’s residents cherish the most.

Espoo uses English as a service language and tailors its services to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse population. The city fosters a strong sense of belonging for everyone who moves there, ensuring that residents can truly make a difference.

Espoo is dedicated to addressing the challenges of demographic changes, climate change, and other global issues through collaboration. The city aims to be a responsible and humane pioneer, creating a good place for everyone to live, learn, work, and start a business.
