Review of indicator frameworks supporting urban planning for resilience and health

Urban planning, risk governance, and resilience have become increasingly critical pathways to promote and protect public health at the local level. Climate change, poorly planned urbanization, and environmental degradation have left many cities highly vulnerable to disasters. The COVID-19 pandemic has further underscored the close links between health and urban environments, highlighting the importance of sustainable and resilient planning.

In response, various global frameworks have been established to address sustainable development, urban environments, and resilience. Awareness of the local benefits of implementing these global agendas is steadily increasing. The Protecting Environments and Health by Building Urban Resilience project was designed to support local authorities and decision-makers in reflecting on the environmental and health dimensions of preparedness and resilience, while promoting the use of urban planning approaches to build safe, healthy, and sustainable cities.

This third report from the project reviews the relevance of international indicators and datasets in supporting urban planning for resilience. It also assesses the suitability of international monitoring frameworks in helping local authorities identify priorities for strengthening resilience in urban settings.
