Strengthening foundations for an inclusive, sustainable, and resilient economy

The Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), prior to 2016, achieved progress across a range of development priorities, from primary education completion rates to household electrification coverage. Its annual economic growth was strong, averaging 8.0%. However, worsening macroeconomic imbalances notably rising public debt, steep currency depreciation, and elevated inflation and high vulnerability to climate and external shocks are challenges for the country in achieving an inclusive, sustainable, and resilient economy. The new country partnership strategy (CPS) for the Lao PDR sets the course for efforts of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to respond to these challenging needs until 2028.
