Sustainability at a Crossroad

93% of experts say the current sustainability agenda needs to change.

Well, this is not shocking to me.

The model is not working. Obvious!

Focusing only on board presentations, regulations, ESG reports, and commitments isn’t helping. Real progress is nt showing on the ground.

Who’s responsible? and who’s failing?

Based on this survey of 844 experienced sustainability experts across 72 countries:
– National governments and institutional investors are seen as having contributed the least.
– NGOs, social movements, and even the UN have lost credibility over time.
– Academia and research institutions, on the other hand, are gaining trust.

So what actually moves the needle?

The report highlights a few clear sweet spots (high impact and high feasibility)
– Carbon pricing
– Sustainable urban planning
– Mandatory reporting
– Science-based targets
– Circular economy models
– Sustainable finance and green bonds
– Integrating sustainability into core business strategy

💡 Stepping one step back, why we need to rethink and redefine sustainability?

A while ago, I was reflecting on this. Our sustainability model has always been driven by an economic lens. I hear it all the time in our industry. The conversation usually goes like this: “Show me that it’s economically effective, then tell me about the social and environmental benefits.”

That mindset matters. And we need to change it.
