Sustainable Bonds For Nature: A Practitioner’s Guide

Nature is declining faster than at any point in human history, and finance must be part of the solution.

At its Annual General Meeting on June 26, 2025, the Executive Committee of the Tagar#Green, Tagar#Social, Tagar#Sustainability, and Sustainability-Linked Bond Principles (GSSS), supported by ICMA – International Capital Market Association, released a new guidance titled “Sustainable Bonds for Nature: A Practitioner’s Guide.” This guide is designed for all types of bond issuers public and private to finance nature-related projects such as conservation, restoration, and biodiversity protection. It introduces the optional “Nature Bond” designation for green bonds whose proceeds are fully allocated to nature-focused activities and encourages the use of nature-related key performance indicators (KPIs) in sustainability-linked bonds.

I think this represents a critical step in promoting credible and targeted investments to restore and protect nature, by both the public and private sectors. Anyway, this guide can be applied not only to bonds, but also to other debt instruments such as loans, with reference to the Green Loan Principles and the Sustainability-Linked Loan Principles.
