The Plastic Recycling Reality
Plastic recycling is often presented as the solution to plastic pollution. But the data tells a different story.
Globally, only 9% of plastic waste is recycled, while 49% ends up in landfills, 19% is incinerated, and 22% is mismanaged, leaking into rivers, oceans, and ecosystems or being disposed of in unsafe conditions.
These numbers reveal an important truth: we cannot recycle our way out of the plastic crisis.
Real progress requires shifting from a linear “take, make, dispose” economy to a circular economy where waste is designed out from the beginning. That means reducing unnecessary plastic, designing products for reuse and recyclability, improving collection and sorting infrastructure, investing in advanced recycling technologies, and holding producers accountable for the full lifecycle of their products.
Businesses also have a critical role to play. Sustainable packaging, recycled content, eco-design, and extended producer responsibility are no longer optional—they are becoming competitive and regulatory necessities.
The future isn’t about recycling more alone. It’s about producing less waste, using materials longer, and keeping valuable resources in circulation.
A circular economy begins with better design—not a bigger landfill.
