  • Secondary Consumers (Carnivores): These animals eat herbivores. They obtain energy by consuming the chemical energy stored in the bodies of herbivores.
  • Tertiary Consumers: Higher-level carnivores that feed on secondary consumers. They are often top predators in the ecosystem.
  • Omnivores: These are organisms that consume both plants and animals, obtaining energy from multiple trophic levels.

4. Decomposers (Detritivores and Saprotrophs)

  • Detritivores: Organisms like earthworms and certain insects that consume dead organic matter (detritus), breaking it down into smaller particles.
  • Saprotrophs: Fungi and bacteria that break down organic matter at the microscopic level, returning nutrients to the soil and releasing energy stored in the organic matter back into the ecosystem.

5. Energy Transfer and Loss

  • Trophic Levels: Energy flows from one trophic level to the next—producers to consumers to decomposers. However, not all energy is transferred efficiently; typically, only about 10% of the energy is passed on from one trophic level to the next, with the rest lost as heat due to metabolism and respiration.
  • Energy Pyramid: The decreasing amount of energy at each successive trophic level can be represented by an energy pyramid, with the broadest part at the base (producers) and the narrowest at the top (top predators).

6. Importance of Energy Flow

  • Ecosystem Functioning: Energy flow drives the functioning of ecosystems, supporting the growth, reproduction, and survival of organisms.
  • Nutrient Cycling: As energy flows through the ecosystem, it also drives the cycling of nutrients, maintaining ecosystem health and productivity.
