The Recycling Reality
What happens to the plastic we throw away?
The numbers reveal a sobering reality:
♻️ Only 9% is recycled.
🔥 19% is incinerated.
🗑️ 49% ends up in landfills.
🌊 22% is mismanaged—burned openly, dumped into waterways, or handled through unsafe disposal systems.
That means the vast majority of plastic does not return to the economy as a useful resource.
The challenge is bigger than recycling alone.
A truly circular plastic economy requires action across the entire value chain—from designing products for reuse and recyclability to improving collection, sorting, infrastructure, and markets for recycled materials.
The goal should not simply be to manage more waste.
It should be to create less waste in the first place.
Design out unnecessary plastic.
Keep materials in use longer.
Build systems that make circularity economically viable.
Because plastic is not inherently waste.
It becomes waste when the system fails to give it another life.
