The Viennese Path to Sustainability and Civic Participation

Winning the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize 2020 was a great honour for us, and it confirmed that the Vienna path (Viennese way) we had been following for several years was the right one. Vienna is not a city that can be designed on a drawing board. Its long history and rich architectural heritage require us to address the challenges of climate adaptation, population growth, and constant technological innovation in ways that are different from other cities. We have to carefully transform our city to make it fit for the future.

It was Vienna’s ability to combine history and modernity that won over the jury. We were continuing to build on its strong cultural and historical foundations, even whilst transforming the city into a sustainable and liveable metropolis with modern innovations. The fact that the Viennese population could actively participate in the development of the city was also a significant factor. This is why I was very proud to personally accept the award at the World City Summit in Singapore on August 1, 2022—after a two-year delay due to the Covid pandemic.

We certainly have not been idle since then. Instead, the award—which recognised us as “the city with the most sustainable urban development”—has made us more determined than ever to pursue our Viennese path to become a model climate city. Perhaps the most important development since then is Vienna’s move to become the only province in Austria to pass its own climate law, in support of the city’s climate objectives.
