Towards a Sustainable Future, K-Smart City

Cities today face complex challenges caused by climate change, pollution, heavy traffic, and an aging population. Against this backdrop, cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and Digital Twin are being leveraged to solve various urban problems and develop cities more sustainably.

In Korea, cities also faced increasing challenges caused by rapid economic expansion and urbanization. And that was the backdrop of Korea’s smart city policy initiatives since the early 2000’s. The first smart city policy initiative was the U-City (Ubiquitous City) development to build new cities integrated with digital infrastructure and the IT. Now, the policy focus has shifted to solving specific urban problems and expanding smart city services in various areas such as traffic management, energy supply, and safety.

“Towards a Sustainable Future: K-Smart Cities” was published to share Korea’s smart city development stories and smart technologies. In this casebook, you will find not only the smart solutions developed and used in Korea but also the real-life cases that show how the solutions addressed existing urban problems and made a difference to citizens’ living.

From the seven cities introduced in this casebook—Seoul, Busan, Sejong, Incheon (Songdo), Jeju, Gimhae, Suwon—you will gain policy insights from the smart city strategies developed in each city in reflection of their unique needs and circumstances. In the appendix, we listed Korea’s key smart city solutions for your pragmatic understanding of the technological needs in smart city development and management.
