Understanding GHG emissions
Greenhouse gas emissions are a critical aspect of any climate strategy. Businesses must understand the three scopes of emissions to tackle them effectively.
Scope 1
Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions from sources a company owns or controls. These can include emissions from company vehicles, on-site manufacturing, or even a company’s own boiler for heating. It’s helpful to think of Scope 1 emissions as the company’s own “tailpipe emissions.”
Scope 2
Scope 2 emissions are indirect emissions from the power a company purchases. Even though a company doesn’t directly produce these emissions, they are a direct result of its energy consumption. These emissions are generated at a power plant and travel through the grid to the company.
Scope 3
Scope 3 emissions are all other indirect emissions from a companyโs value chain. They are the most complex category and typically account for most of a company’s total emissions. Scope 3 emissions can be both upstream and downstream. Upstream examples include emissions from the production of purchased goods, business travel, and employee commuting. Downstream examples include the emissions from the use of a company’s products by consumers and the end-of-life treatment of sold products.
Because of their complexity, tackling Scope 3 emissions requires extensive collaboration, transparency, and innovation. Businesses cannot solve this issue alone; they must work with suppliers, partners, and even customers to find new ways to reduce emissions throughout their value chain.

Reporting on all three scopes is no longer just a technical exercise; it’s a strategic necessity. By measuring and managing emissions across all scopes, companies aren’t just reacting to pressure they’re building a more resilient and competitive business for the future.
